cavaliers cheerleadersCleveland Rocked: The Cavs face some adversity as they head into the stretch run of the NBA season

The Cleveland Cavaliers were riding a high about a week ago. Online sportsbooks had the Cavs listed at -110 wagering lines to take the Eastern Conference and +225 NBA lines to win an NBA title and they had just completed a deal for Antawn Jamison.

Things aren’t so peachy this week. Cleveland learned that center Shaquille O’Neal, who sprained his right thumb in a game against Boston last Thursday, would be out for the rest of the regular season and possibly the first-round of the NBA playoffs—he had successful surgery on his thumb on Monday.

“The doctors were very pleased with the surgery [Monday] morning,” Cavs GM Danny Ferry said. “He will be in a splint for the next two weeks. From there he starts the process of physical therapy so that he can be at full strength and back on the court during the playoffs.”

Cleveland currently is using Anderson Varejao at the five-spot but it may be another three weeks before they can get some help. The Cavaliers dealt away C Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who was subsequently bought out by the Washington Wizards, the team that had traded for him a little over a week earlier, meaning he could possibly return to Cleveland in a few weeks time.

Strangely enough, the Cavs’ chances of taking the NBA title have improved with Cleveland sitting at +200 sports wagering lines to win the NBA title and still -110 wagering lines to take the East. Following a home game against the New York Knicks on Monday, the Cavaliers will travel to New Jersey to play the Nets on Wednesday.

In Cleveland’s last nine games overall, they are 3-6 against the spread. They have produced 7 Overs and 3 Unders in those 10 games. The Cavs are on a seven-game win streak straight up in their last seven overall against the Nets, as one might expect against a bad New Jersey team. Looking at the Over/Under numbers in these head-to-head matchups with only 3 Overs and 11 Unders.

In Cleveland’s last eight visits to Jersey, these two have combined for 6 Unders.

The Boston Celtics play a road game against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday before hosting the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday.Boston has been a very good play for sports bettors in their last 10 visits to the Motor City, producing a profitable mark of 8-2 ATS. Total bettors take note, in those 10 games the results have been only 1 Over and 9 Unders.

Looking ahead, Boston heads in to play Charlotte, where they are only 3-7 ATS. That will be their second game in back-to-back nights. The Celtics have also struggled in their last 10 games in this situation, posting a losing 3-7 ATS mark.

kobe bryant ron artestNBA players travel a lot during the regular season and that doesn’t seem to be changing in the offseason as a lot of players are switching zip codes. Remember how Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant and then-Houston Rocket Ron Artest were giving each other the stink eye during the playoffs?

Well, the two will be teammates this coming season, as the Lakers signed Artest on Tuesday. Unfortunately, when you are at the top, everyone tries to loot your players and the Lakers lost SF Trevor Ariza, who has or will sign with those same Houston Rockets. The team is attempting to bring Lamar Odom back into the fold but he could leave and as it stands, the Los Angeles Lakers are listed as the odds-on faves, at +225, to repeat as NBA champions. What about the team that the Lakers played in the final?

The Orlando Magic managed to add Vince Carter from the New Jersey Nets but they are set to lose a number of key players that contributed to their playoff run. Hedo Turkoglu, Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston have played their last games with the team and online sportsbooks have the team listed at +900 to do what they couldn’t this year—win an NBA title.

With LeBron James possibly becoming a free agent in 2010, the Cleveland Cavaliers are probably taking the, “NBA championship or bust” motto—they brought in Shaquille O’Neal and are hoping that Shaq can help LeBron win a title next year. The Cavs, with Shaq and LeBron in tow, are listed at +275 at Sportsbook.com to win next season’s NBA championship.

The San Antonio Spurs traded Kurt Thomas, Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto to the Milwaukee Bucks for Richard Jefferson and also added F/C Antonio McDyess from the Detroit Pistons. Still the Spurs are listed at +1400 to win it all next season.

After suffering a 33-49 season, the Toronto Raptors will add the services of former Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu and will see former first-rounder Andrea Bargnani returning to the team but Toronto still sees itself listed as a +10,000 longshot to win the NBA championship next season.

The Dallas Mavericks will be bringing back PG Jason Kidd and are said to be on the verge of pulling off a deal that would bring Shawn Marion from the Toronto Raptors. The Mavs are currently listed at +5000 to win next season’s NBA title.

A lot of big names have changed addresses and there could be more by the time the summer’s through.
