miami quarterback jacory harrisNCAA football wagering: Miami is going to need every one of the nine days off it had to get ready for Georgia Tech. After the thrilling 38-34 Labor Day upset win in Tallahassee, the Hurricanes comeback on Thursday as a 5-1/2-point wagering lines home favorite to Georgia Tech in a matchup of top ACC contenders. Odds-makers at Sportsbook.com have seemingly done their job well on this game, as betting action on the point spread is split nearly evenly down the line.

Miami Quarterback Jacory Harris was magnificent in the opener, throwing for 386 yards while running back Kraig Cooper was a versatile all-around performer in running the ball, catching passes and returning kicks. The defense gave up 404 yards and was especially vulnerable to routes over the middle, 10-18 yards down the field. Fortunately, Tech is a running club who doesn’t have the style or players to capitalize on that weakness.

The 20th ranked Hurricanes can further enhance their image of yesteryear with a win over the country’s 14th ranked team. Miami is only 6-13-1 ATS off a straight up win however. Also, while 12-1 straight up historically on Thursday night, they own just a 4-8 ATS record.

This will be the Yellow Jackets second straight Thursday encounter after surviving against Clemson last week, 30-27 as five-point favorites. This is Georgia Tech’s first road game of 2009 and they’ll have to clean up the fumbling bugaboo that cost them a couple of wins last year and has returned again. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt has put the pigskin on the ground, though his passing has looked better on occasion to start the year.

Georgia Tech is 15-6-1 ATS in its last 22 games off a spread loss.

Sportsbook.com has Miami as 5-1/2-point sports wagering favorites with total of 54. The Hurricanes are on a slide of 0-6 ATS as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0 points and are 15-5 UNDER in home games off a road win against a conference rival. Georgia Tech is 19-6 ATS after playing a Thursday game and 12-3 UNDER after a win by six or less points.

The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 straight up and against the spread in four ACC meetings with Miami, including two outright road upsets. The Hurricanes are only 17-24 ATS since joining the ACC in conference play, and 0-6 against the spread at home when playing with revenge.

College Football Wagering: Alabama vs Virginia Tech Wagering Lines

greg mcelroyThe ABC Saturday night college football wagering schedule starts out with a doozy of a game between Alabama and Virginia Tech (8:00E), a pair of top 10 teams in most polls. The Crimson Tide come off their best season in many years, as they started 12-0 in 2008 before dropping their final two games. They are a 6-point favorite over a Hokies’ team that is expected to reign over the ACC in ’09. Nearly two-thirds of bettors at Sportsbook.com like ‘Bama’s chances of getting it done on the number.

Alabama played in the SEC wagering lines title game and made a BCS bowl game, are greater things on the horizon for Nick Saban’s (19-8, 12-13-1 ATS) third year in Tuscaloosa? It depends and the answer won’t really be known until later in the season. Where the tricky part is the offense, junior Greg McElroy has waited his turn and is now the big man on campus for the Crimson Tide. McElroy has professed to be ready and sophomore sensation Julio Jones will be one of his favorite targets to pass to. The offensive line has to be reworked with three outstanding starters gone and running back Glen Coffee leaving early. On defense, there are zero question marks with nine starters back and improving depth in support. All-American nose tackle Terrance “Mount” Cody is poised for a colossal campaign and is reportedly leaner and meaner than ever. Rolando McClain is a headache at linebacker and the secondary has aggressive ball-hawks. The Tide have won last five of six as favorites.

Does it seem possible that Virginia Tech was ever bad under coach Frank Beamer? You have to go back to 1992 to find the last losing season in Blacksburg. The sports wagering Hokies have won 10 or more games eight times in the last decade including five in a row (38-24-1 ATS). With 14 starters back in the fold, this opening game could determine if Virginia Tech is national contender or one of the best in the ACC. Junior Tyrod Taylor in the undisputed leader of the offense. He’s worked diligently to become better passer and expects to see the results. With Darren Evans out with an ACL tear an unproven yet versatile running core will have to step up, running behind an offensive line that came into its own late last season.

Jason Worilds might be just 6’2 240 pound defensive end; however he’s up field before the tackle is even out of his stance pressuring the quarterback, leading another stern Hokies defense.

The Hokies are 12-4 ATS in their first road game of the season.

Odds-makers have made their case about this matchup. Bama opened as a six-point choice despite a new quarterback and just four returning offensive starters. That speaks volumes about what they think about the difference between SEC and ACC. This is a special opening matchup and Virginia Tech is 17-6 ATS in September road encounters. The Tide is 16-1 SU in opening tilts since 1992, but just 5-10 ATS during that time.

The main event on opening night features two Top 25 teams, Oregon and Boise State. The Boise State basketball arena will also be opened so students without tickets can watch the game.

It’s free and very simple to play.

Boise State head coach Chris Petersen thinks hype and excitement is a good thing for the students and the locals. “I think it’s great for the city and great for the fans, and hopefully our team is prepared and does a great job,” Petersen told the AP. Petersen and Bronco fans are also probably doubly excited that the Broncos open up at home.

Maybe visiting teams are mesmerized by the blue turf and can’t focus on the task at hand, but the Broncos have been red-hot on their home field, going 20-0 straight up in their last 20 games at Bronco Stadium. Furthermore, Boise State has been almost as hot in the month of September, going 16-4 SU in its last 20 September games—the Broncos are -170 on the money line at Sportsbetting.com.

On the other side of field, the Oregon Ducks elevated offensive coordinator Chip Kelly to the head coach position and the team would like to get things started off with a win. In their last ten road games in the month of September, the Ducks are 9-1 SU and 9-1 ATS (against the spread). Oregon is +150 on the Money line.\

NCAA Wagering Trends: Sports bettors like the underdog in this one, as the Ducks have been seeing steady action with 70% of the wagers going their way.

The Utah Utes had a season for the ages last year, completing the perfect 13-0 season and receiving an invite to a BCS bowl, defeating Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl. They covered as 8.5-point underdogs to boot.

The Utes enter the season ranked 19th in the AP poll but unfortunately for Utah, QB Brian Johnson has moved on, signing with the UFL’s New York Sentinels and the Utes will have a new QB lining up behind center.

Utah head coachKyle Whittingham said he won’t announce a starter until game time but according to reports, junior QB Terrence Cain has been taking a majority of the snaps with the first-team in practice. The Utes have feasted on the Aggies in the last 11 games, going 11-0 SU and in its last 14 games overall, Utah has gone 14-0 SU. In its last eight games, the Utes have also gone 6-2 ATS.

NCAA Wagering Trends: Bettors like the big underdog in this one, as that 20-point line is attractive. Utah State is seeing a majority of the betting action with 65% of the volume siding with the Aggies.
